Welcome!

I am an assistant professor at the Department of Political Science, University of Amsterdam and a research fellow with the ERC project on Election, Violence, and Parties. I am also affiliated with Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research, Political Economy and Transnational Governance, Amsterdam Centre for Conflict Studies, and Amsterdam Conflict Research Network.

I received a PhD in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. My research interests span the fields of political economy and comparative politics.

My current research is centered around the politics of inequality. Specifically, I study the political consequences of inequality in non-violent contexts (such as, electoral volatility, formation of party systems, performance of political parties, ethnic voting) and violent contexts (ethno-religious riots). I also measure social inequality and study why and when it persists.

I specialize in research methods as a field in itself. I employ diverse methods, combining statistical analysis of large secondary datasets with experiments, surveys, and case studies. I have designed and implemented a national survey in India, survey experiments in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh (India), and have conducted field research in Dhaka (Bangladesh).
